Well it has been a while since I posted and a lot has happened here at WPI over the last couple of months. Trying to capture everything here would be impossible, but looking forward there is lots to share. With May comes a new season of excitement here on campus:

The weather turned nice…finally…and students are able to enjoy the Quad.

Classes have ended and faculty are preparing their final grades for D-term.

Seniors are counting down the days until graduation and the next phase of their lives.

The enrollment deadline has passed and we are seeing a fantastic group of students who have chosen to be part of the Class of 2017.

Summer construction projects are about to begin…expect a whole new quad by September.

In the admissions world we are continuing to work with transfer candidates and preparing for our upcoming summer programs in July and August. We’ll be finalizing our Summer Academic Visit Days shortly, so keep an eye on our web site.

Enjoy the beautiful weather!

In addition to some rest and relaxation I’ve had the chance to connect with a number of prospective students and their families during my time in St. Thomas. Yesterday I visited the Antilles School and saw a number of students including sophmores, juniors and seniors. Then last night I had the chance to have dinner with four of our applicants and their families. Two of the students were previously admitted, and I was pleased to share good news with the other two students and their families as their admission letters are still in route.

A fun time was had by all. There were lots of questions, talk about snow and cold weather, and the chance for me to learn more about St. Thomas. Now I thought that it would also be a great chance for the students and families get to know each other…but it’s a small world down here and everyone already knew each other!! All of the stduents have had the chance to visit our campus and hopefully we’ll have all four up for a return visit in April and welcome them as part of WPI’s Class of 2017 in August.

If the gathering sounds like a good time I can’t promise a free trip to St. Thomas, but I can let you know we’ll be having a number of admitted student gatherings across the country over the next few months. These gatherings are a great way to get all your questions answered and to meet some admitted students from your area. Locations will be added over the next few months, but there will be events in February in both Florida and California. Visit the admissions web site for all the details.

Stay safe the next few days…

I get a lot of e-mail….maybe not a great surprise to many people out there. I get e-mail from colleagues, community members, prospective students, parents, people trying to sell me things, and of course junk. Thankfully most of the junk gets blocked. I think I am pretty good about keeping up with e-mail, but it’s easy to get behind…especially if you are away from the office for a few days. It’s rare that I delete anything without at least a quick glance.

Rewind to last week…right before Thanksgiving…things are quieting down a bit. I get an e-mail from one of our International Student Advisors about a new digital magazine. From the subject line it doesn’t sound very exciting…but I am also not sure exactly what it is all about. I decide to take a peek and I am glad a did. As promised I found a wealth of “articles, photography and poetry from Asia, Africa, Central and South America” by students faculty and staff.

In the meantime if you are thinking about WPI and about our global opportunities you should definitely check it out.

There are a number of exciting campus events each year at WPI, but one of my favorites is always Homecoming. Spending most of the day on campus I got to see former tour guides, classmates, faculty, staff, trustees, and of course all the cute children of my friends. The weather cooperated and a fun time was had by all.

Homecoming also included my 20th reunion BBQ. It was great to see some classmates that I hadn’t quite frankly seen in 20 years!! I was pleased that my freshmen floor, Daniels 3rd, was especially well represented on campus. And from the picture it might look like we were a very progressive class….about a 50/50 male/female ratio:) Not everyone made the picture, but luckily we did sneak it in before the rain showers came through late in the day.

Want to learn more about homcoming? Check out the 600 or so photos on-line!

Bonjour from France! There has been a lot going on over here since my last update. This week was especially exciting, as our group was able to travel to KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium to take part in the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling (CR3) conference being held there. We had the opportunity to hear from many graduate students as well as professionals about the future of the recycling industry, and specifically how we can better recover and reuse metals. On Friday, we were also able to take a tour of Umicore’s recycling facility in Hoboken, Belgium. In terms of our project, we will be focusing on the collection, disassembly, and sorting of electronic waste. This is a huge problem, as growing amounts of cell phones and computers are ending up in landfills, when they should be recycled and reused. In conjunction with Umicore, we hope to be able to devise a better method of collection, while also analyzing the environmental impact that electronic waste is having in Europe and around the world.

Outside of the project work, it has also been exciting to be able to travel over the past couple of weeks. A few weeks back, we took a trip to Brussels, Belgium. We spent a lot of time at the Chocolate Museum, and also had the opportunity to see a concert in the Grand Place. This past weekend, I took the train to Voiron and Lyon, two cities in the south of France near the Alps. While there, I was able to visit Roman ruins, as well as the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, which is located on a hill above the city and gives an amazing few of all of Lyon. In the coming weeks, I will be traveling to Paris and Beaune, and I will certainly update everyone regarding those trips. I will also be seeing the Patriots play in London soon, and I am really looking forward to that!

For now, I am going to continue to work on my major project and to apply to jobs back home. It is hard to believe that my senior year is going by so quickly, but I am excited to see how everything will progress in the coming months.

This past year the WPI Office of Admissions received 7,585 first year applications. Any guesses where WPI is most popular? Westford Academy (MA) sent us the most applications for the Class of 2016. The 45 applications from Westford were closely followed by Acton/Boxborough (MA) and Wachusett Regional (MA) with 42 applications respectively.

Of course that’s only part of the story…if you look at our first year class that entered just over a month ago there are approximately 680 high school represented among our 952 first-year students. Which schools are represented in the entering class? Here are the top 13 high school in the US and the top nine outside the US:

Hello from Lille, France!! Lille is located in northern France, almost at the border with Belgium, and it is where I will be living for the next four months as I complete my Major Project. I have the unique opportunity of helping to launch a new project center for WPI, as one of the two students to work in Lille for the first time. We are working at HEI, and will be completing our Major Project in conjunction with other French students and professors. It is an amazing opportunity to solve a technical challenge, while also learning a lot about multicultural perspectives and problem solving techniques. In my first week here, I have been studying A LOT of French and also exploring the town, which is filled with college students from around the world. I have already been able to interact with students from Peru, Italy, Brazil, England, Spain, Mexico, and Switzerland in just the first week. The picture to the left shows a bunch of us at a picnic in the park. The project that we will be working on is going to be in the field of sustainability and resource recycling/recovery, and we will be finding out all of the final details very soon.

One of the best parts about Lille outside of school is all of the amazing food and art. This week, we took a trip to the Palais des Beaux Arts de Lille, a huge art museum featuring works from around the world. It was exciting to see a Monet painting for the first time. There are also other attractions, like the local zoo, which is free and a great place to walk around. Lastly, this weekend, the Braderie de Lille is occurring throughout the city. It brings roughly 2.5 million people to the city and is the largest flea market in Europe. I can’t wait to go explore and eat mussels, which is the local tradition! As we begin our project and progress through, I will be sure to report back with more updates, but for now, au revoir!

–Pat

This Sunday morning is one of the most exciting of the year as we welcome the newest members of the WPI community to campus! The Class of 2016 is yet another extremely impressive group of young women and men, and we are thrilled that they are joining the ranks of WPI students and alumni. I am particularly pleased to report that this year was the most competitive ever for admission to WPI, giving even more credit to the achievements of the members of the incoming class!

To the members of the Class of 2016: in my time here I cannot think of a more exciting point for you to be entering WPI. We have several brand new facilities and several others under construction, the faculty is continuing to grow and expand in size and stature, the student body is just as impressive, and the campus just looks gorgeous! I urge you to take advantage of all of the opportunities—expected and unexpected—that you’ll encounter this year and in the years to follow. It’s going to be hard work, but it’s also going to be great fun! Congratulations and good luck!

It’s been a little while since I last posted. It’s been a busy summer with visitors to campus, summer pre-college programs, and of course recruiting the next incoming class. The class of 2016 will be arriving over the next couple of weeks, with everyone moving in on or before August 19th. Just when the craziness of life (and campus) wears you down here’s a perspective you don’t see everyday…everything seems so quiet and peaceful from 1,800 feet.

Now you’d never catch me up in the air taking these!!

A big thanks to TonyLinn from Mechanical Engineering for these great photos.

We are also in the early stages of a new admissions video and will be shooting some aerial videos this fall. If you are on campus that day be sure to wave:)
