Pro Tip Tuesday: Student View in Canvas

Filed in Canvas by on September 5, 2017

student view buttonAs an Instructor, you see all options available in your Canvas course, including any pages or files you have hidden. It can sometimes be helpful to view what a student in your course sees to ensure you have the site configured exactly how you want.

Using Student View allows you to act as a student in your course site, including taking Quizzes and Submitting Assignments.  You can make sure those Assignments and Files that you intended to be hidden from students, are in fact inaccessible.

When you leave Student View, you have the option of preserving the actions you’ve taken – so when you return to your regular “instructor” view, you can grade your quiz or assignment.  To save your “student” work, simply click Leave Student View.  To remove your “student” work, click Reset Student.

Note:

  • Once you activate Student View, the Test Student is shown at the end of the Gradebook and SpeedGrader and is automatically added to every section in your course. If you want to remove the test student completely, you will have to remove the test student from your section enrollments.

How to do it

  1. Enter your course site
  2. In the left-hand navigation, click the Settings button
  3. In the right-hand menu, click the Student View button
