Future Plans

Self-sustainability is a concern in informal settlements.  Due to this concern, many efforts have been taken to create a self-sustainable environment by organizations such as Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) and the Shaster Foundation.  When planning the septic system, self-sustainability played a major role in dictating how it was designed and the functions of each piece.  This system has two goals, a short-term, which was achieved upon completion of the construction of the system, and a long-term which focuses on creating a sustainable septic system to separate and safely process graywater with the potential to be reused as flush water. This can be accomplished by implementing an innovative sanitation solution that will integrate urine-divergent non-splash flush toilets, an Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR), Biodigesters, Biofiltration, and solar pasteurization on the chosen pilot site. By designing the system to create a separate graywater system and a blackwater system, and implementing a system similar to ABR, the potential to reach this goal has been increased and can be completed in the near future.
