2012-13 Competitor Schedule

Below is the daily schedule for competitors for the 2013 Sample Return Robot Competition at WPI. This schedule is subject to change as needed.


Monday, June 3rd

    Teams may begin arriving at the venue on this day. Media will begin arriving on site to photograph, record, interview, and interact with teams.

  • 0800: Pit area opens (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Official Check-in available (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1000: Practice area opens (WPI Quad)
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1730: Dinner available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1900: Practice area closes
  • 2000: Pit area closes. Teams will not have access again until the next day, so any items needed for overnight work need to be removed prior to pit close.

Tuesday, June 4th

    All teams must arrive on site by Tuesday morning. Media will be on-site.

  • 0800: Pit area opens (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Official check-in open (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0900: Mandatory Team Arrival Deadline – All competing teams must be on-site, with robot, and checked in at this time. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1000: Mandatory Team Meeting. All teams must have their team leader present for this meeting. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1100: Practice area opens (WPI Quad)
  • 1100: Sample Viewing Area available (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1300: Initial inspections begin (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1700: Sample Viewing Area closes
  • 1730: Dinner available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1900: Practice area closes
  • 1945: Initial Level 1 inspection completed, assessment of Technology Achievement Award status (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1945: Order of Level 1 play & color of platform reported to all teams
  • 2000: All robots impounded. No teams may access their robot after 8PM through the conclusion of Level 1 competition without escort by a credentialed and approved Sample Return Robot Challenge volunteer. Teams may remove their batteries to be charged elsewhere overnight, but no other robot components can be removed or will be allowed to be brought back into impound the following day. For safety reasons, teams should not plan to leave their batteries charging overnight.
  • 2000: Pit area closes.

Wednesday, June 5th

    Level 1 Competition day. In the event of inclement weather, the schedule will slip forward in the day accordingly, and into the next day as required.

  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Team Viewing Area opens (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0850: First two competitors begin moving their robots to the competition area. Once in the competition area, judges will conduct a final inspection, teams will place their robot on the competition platform as directed, then all team members will be directed to an area to view the competition.
  • 0930: Level 1 Competition Begins. Teams must report to impound when the team before them starts their run (so team #3 reports when team #2 starts their run). Any teams who successfully complete Level 1 will be held at the competition field for re-inspection.
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1600: Critical inspection of Level 2 qualifiers
  • 1800: Level 2 competitors have access to their robots to prepare – time is approximate based on the actual number of competitors & number who complete Level 1 (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1900: Level 2 inspections begin (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 2000: All Level 2 robots impounded
  • 2000: Pits close

Thursday, June 6th

    Level 2 Competition day.

    • In the event of inclement weather, the schedule will slip forward in the day accordingly, and into the next day as required.
    • In general, attempts will be made to center the competition day around 1300.
    • If more than 5 teams qualify for Level 2, the Level 2 competition will be spread evenly over 2 days as weather permits. For 5 or less teams, best efforts will be made to run all Level 2 competitors on the same day.
    • If no teams qualify for Level 2, teams will mostly likely be provided opportunity to re-rerun Level 1 throughout the day on Thursday or Friday.
  • Level 2 Competition schedule is dependent on the number of competitors who qualify and therefore is subject to significant change and adjustment. A sample schedule is below.
  • 0800: Breakfast available for all teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Team Viewing Area open (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0815: First competitor begins moving their robot to the platform loading area. Upon arrival, the team places their robot on the platform, completes a final inspection, and attaches their robot to the platform. Competition staff then move the platform to its final position on the field. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0900: Level 2 Competition begins. Each team moves their robot from impound when directed by the staff.
  • 1200: Lunch available for all teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1900: Level 2 competition ends
  • 1900: Robots completing Level 2 are re-inspected. Prize money awards determined.*
  • 2000: All robots released.*

*Depending on the number of teams that qualify for Level 2, competition may continue into Friday.



Friday, June 7th

  • This day is available for competition as needed (either Level 2 day 2, Level 2 entirely, or a Level 1 re-run). There will be a large number of student groups visiting the pit area to talk with teams as well as NASA staff, astronauts, and VIPS. All teams are expected to be present.
  • 0800: Pit area opens (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0900: Student groups begin touring pit. At check-in, each team will sign up for at least 1 time to talk with student groups (15-30 minutes). (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0900: NASA Staff, VIPs, etc will begin touring the pits and meeting with teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1200: Lunch available for all teams (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1415: NASA Social attendees will tour the pit and meet personally with teams. These attendees have large social media followings and are invited to promote the event from the ‘inside’. It’s a great opportunity to promote your team, effort, and sponsors. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1700: Dinner available for teams – we are WORKING on booking a speaker for teams on Friday night, but have not been able to confirm at this time. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 2000: Pits Close.

Saturday, June 8th

  • This day is available for competition in the event of inclement weather. This day is a MAJOR festival day on campus as well as the closing ceremonies for the Challenge (assuming competition is complete). Over 10,000 kids and adults are expected to visit this festival throughout the day. There will be large media, NASA, VIP, and public presence on this day. Outside of the required demo times, teams are welcome to spend the day enjoying the festival.

  • 1000: Presentation of prizes and SRR Closing Ceremony. TouchTomorrow Opening Ceremony. (WPI Quad)
  • 1030: 3-4 teams move to team demo area to showcase robot to festival attendees – sign up available at check-in (WPI Quad – Team Practice Area)
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1230: 3-4 teams move to team demo area to showcase robot to festival attendees – sign up available at check-in (WPI Quad – Team Practice Area)
  • 1330: 3-4 teams move to team demo area to showcase robot to festival attendees – sign up available at check-in (WPI Quad – Team Practice Area)
  • 1730-2030: Team Recognition Reception & Dinner – BY INVITATION ONLY (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
    • Come as you are or as you like! This dinner is to celebrate the teams and your accomplishment, as well as provide you professional networking and growth opportunities
    • 1730-1830: Cocktail hour & networking opportunities with teams, staff, and VIPs
    • 1830: Dinner service begins
    • 1900: Formal program begins, including speakers from WPI and NASA.
    • 1950: Acknowledgement of team achievements, presentation of awards.
    • 2030: Dinner ends

Sunday, June 9th

  • This day is available for competition in the event of inclement weather but is highly unexpected. It is an opportunity for teams to pack their items.
  • 0800: Pits open. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1200: Bagged lunch available for teams. (WPI Sports & Recreation Center – Robotic Pits)
  • 1700: Pits close and event concludes. Preferably earlier provided teams do not require the extra time.
