2011-12 Competitor Schedule

Below is the daily schedule for competitors for the 2012 Sample Return Robot Competition at WPI. This schedule is subject to change as needed.


Thursday, June 14th

    Teams may begin arriving at the venue on this day. Media will begin arriving on site to photograph, record, interview, and interact with teams.

  • 0800: Pit area opens (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0900: Practice area opens (WPI Campus Center Lawn)
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1600: Official check-in available (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1730: Dinner available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1900: Practice area closes
  • 2000: Pit area closes. Teams will not have access again until the next day, so any items needed for overnight work need to be removed prior to 8PM.

Friday, June 15th

    All teams must arrive on site by Friday morning. Media will be on-site as well as local students and educators as part of a professional development opportunity associated with the event. Each team is asked to spend 20 minutes with one of the student groups.

  • 0800: Pit area opens (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0800: Official check-in open (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0900: Mandatory Team Meeting. All teams must have arrived by 9AM and be present for this meeting.
  • 1000: Practice area opens (WPI Campus Center Lawn)
  • 1000: Sample Viewing Area available (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1100: Student Group 1 will visit the pit area and meet with 3 teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1130: Student Group 2 will visit the pit area and meet with 3 teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1200: Lunch available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1230: Student Group 3 will visit the pit area and meet with 1 or more teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1300: Order of Level 1 play & color of platform reported to all teams
  • 1300: Initial inspections available (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1600: Official check-in available (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1700: Sample Viewing Area closes
  • 1730: Dinner available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 1900: Practice area closes
  • 2000: All robots impounded. No teams may access their robot after 8PM through the conclusion of Level 1 competition without escort by a credentialed and approved Sample Return Robot Challenge volunteer. Teams may remove their batteries to be charged elsewhere overnight, but no other robot components can be removed or will be allowed to be brought back into impound the following day. For safety reasons, teams should not plan to leave their batteries charging overnight.
  • 2000: Pit area closes.

Saturday, June 16th

    Level 1 Competition day. In the event of inclement weather, the schedule will slip forward in the day accordingly, and into the next day as required. There will be heavy Media and VIP presence this day.

  • 0800: Breakfast available for teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 0800: Team Viewing Area opens (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 0830: VIP & Media Tours of the pit. All teams are asked to be present to speak briefly with VIPs about their robots. (WPI Campus Center Odeum C)
  • 0900: First three competitors begin moving their robots to the competition area. Once in the competition area, judges will conduct a final inspection, teams will place their robot on the competition platform as directed, then all team members must exit the competition area.
  • 1000: Opening Ceremony (WPI Alden Hall, Webcast)
  • 1000: Festival & Activity area opens (WPI Campus)
  • 1100: Level 1 Competition Begins. Teams must report to impound when the team two before them starts their run (so team #4 reports when team #2 starts their run). Any teams who successfully complete Level 1 will be held at the competition field for re-inspection.
  • 1500: Critical inspection of Level 2 qualifiers
  • 1600: Level 2 competitors have access to their robots to prepare (WPI TBD)
  • 1700: All robots must report for reweighing in their Level 2 configuration. All robots impounded immediately following reweighing.
  • 1730: All Level 2 robots impounded
  • 1730: Pits close
  • 1730-2030: Team Recognition Reception & Dinner – BY INVITATION ONLY (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
    • Come as you are or as you like! This dinner is to celebrate the teams and your accomplishment, as well as provide you professional networking and growth opportunities
    • 1730-1830: Cocktail hour & networking opportunities with teams, staff, and VIPs
    • 1830: Dinner service begins
    • 1900: Formal program begins, including speakers from WPI, NASA, and the robotics industry
    • 1950: Acknowledgement of team achievements, presentation of Level 1 checks and announcement of Level 2 competitors (as applicable).
    • 2030: Dinner ends

Sunday, June 17th

    Level 2 Competition day. In the event of inclement weather, the schedule will slip forward in the day accordingly, and into the next day as required. There will be Media presence this day.

  • If no teams qualify for Level 2, teams will be provided opportunity to unofficially re-rerun Level 1 throughout the day. This will include having access to their robot and the field throughout the day.
  • Level 2 Competition schedule is dependent on the number of competitors who qualify and therefore is subject to significant change and adjustment. A sample schedule is below.
  • 0800: Breakfast available for all teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 0800: Team Viewing Area open (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 0900: First competitor begins moving their robot to the platform loading area. Upon arrival, the team places their robot on the platform, completes a final inspection, and attaches their robot to the platform. Competition staff then move the platform to the field.
  • 1000: Level 2 Competition begins. Each team moves their robot from impound when directed by the staff.
  • 1200: Lunch available for all teams (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 1600: Level 2 competition ends
  • 1600: Robots completing Level 2 are re-inspected. Prize money awards determined.*
  • 1800: Awards & Closing Ceremony* (WPI Campus Center Odeum A&B)
  • 1900: Event concludes. All teams and robots released.*

*Depending on the number of teams that qualify for Level 2, competition may continue into Monday with the closing ceremony being shifted to after the last team runs.
