As a staff member at WPI, I am very interested in the curriculum and the balance between technical studies and the humanities. I am proud to have been a liberal arts major at Duke (many moons ago). I ended up in business (academic health centers) with an MBA and CPA but I feel that my liberal arts background has rounded out my personality, enriched my personal life and also made me a better manager. I have held many different jobs in finance and transitioned to finance in development. I have now expanded to work in overseeing operations in other areas of the Development Office. If I had not been exposed to the liberal arts, I might not have had that curiosity and willingness to learn new skills and thrive in new environments.
So I often wonder about those engineers who start out day one who never veer from the technical track and curse having to take any courses in writing, literature, music or art history. What will they miss?
Keep up the newsletter! It’s very informative.
