The Ellingham Diagram as a Heat-Treater’s Tool

Mike Stempo, P.E., Air Liquid Industrial U.S. LP and a member of CHTE, demonstrates the usefulness of the Ellingham Diagram as a heat-treater’s tool in The Ellingham Diagram: How to Use it in Heat-Treat-Process Atmosphere Troubleshooting, as featured recently in Industrial Heating.   Mike steps through the Ellingham diagram to set up and make clearer how metal heat treaters can use it. The diagram is adapted from its original use as a higher-temperature extractive-metallurgy tool to one where the effects of protective atmospheres and common atmosphere impurities and their impact on heat-treated product can be predicted.
