WPI Students Working at the Washington Project Center Meet the Press and Congressman McGovern
When WPI students reach their junior year, they must complete their Interactive Qualifying Projects (IQP). The choices of projects and locations are great, but a lucky few went to the Washington, D.C., Project Center this past B-Term. Led by advisors and WPI professors Mustapha Fofana, John Orr, and Joshua Rosenstock, 31 third-year students performed eight projects at the following agencies: US Coast Guard (two projects), Department of Energy, US Patent Office, National Science Foundation, Consumer Products Safety Commission, Montgomery County Division of Transit Services, and Delphos International.
On December 2, many of the students visited with Congressman James McGovern, who discussed the important issues facing Congress and the nation with the students, and recalled his personal experiences in Latin America that motivated his passion for human rights, both domestically and globally. After the meeting in his office, McGovern personally escorted the students on a tour of the historic U.S. Capitol building.
On December 12, the students were invited to attend a live broadcast of Meet the Press. The program’s guests were David Axelrod, President Obama’s chief campaign strategist, and Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee. The visit was made possible through a contact of Professor Kent Rissmiller at NBC in Washington. Pictured are Evan Ziavras, Matthew Townsend, Renee Lanza, Katherine Judge, Melanie Laberge, and Edward Osowski, IQP Advisor WPI Professor Mustapha Fofana, Meet the Press host David Gregory, IQP Advisor Professor John Orr, and Barbara Beall (Mustapha’s wife.).

The Solatrium, Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s (WPI) entry in the Solar Decathlon China 2013 competition, was unveiled before an audience of more than 170, including city officials and area legislators, as well as representatives of several corporate sponsors. WPI is part of an international, multi-university team with members from Ghent University in Belgium and New York University Polytechnic Institute. WPI is the lead institution and the house was constructed near the WPI campus by faculty, students, and volunteers.
