Theme: Identity, Agency, and Optimism in a Pandemic

Artist Statement:

When faced with challenging times, it is easy to immerse in doubt, yet COVID-19 brought about different challenges, unlike anything before. The theme identity, agency, and optimism in a pandemic prevails as isolation causes us to indulge in self-reflection. Staying at home can make you feel imprisoned, as in the painting, he is stuck ‘behind bars’ confining him to his home—and ultimately to himself. While forced to face one’s thoughts, many have found it an opportunity to better themselves, whether through new routines or taking up new skills. Embracing the idea that something good could come out of something so devastating has been essential towards remaining optimistic during these times. The dark clouds represent the pain and tragedy faced during the pandemic. In the painting, he faces away from the seemingly endless dark skies while white clouds reveal a calmer ambience on the other side. The contrast of the sky highlights his ability to see past the doubt and remain hopeful, allowing a better version of himself as well as a broader outlook on the world when overcoming this global challenge.
