Theme: Alone Together
Artist Statement:
Silhouette with a Cell Phone is the embodiment of the COVID-19 based theme Alone Together. Set on a normally crowded beach, the silhouette in the distance is seemingly enduring the stormy weather alone. However, upon close inspection, the silhouette is holding a cell phone. This easily overlooked technology provides a means of communicating with countless other people. Even though this connection may seem tenuous in the age of COVID-19, the existence and awareness of such ties heightens our ability to weather whatever the oncoming storms may bring. Alone Together is an important theme as COVID-19 has changed how we must communicate and exemplifies the uncertainty about the future. While the beach will still be there after the storm has passed, the landscape and the occupants prior to the storm may have been forever changed as the manner we communicate may have been forever changed. Yet, Silhouette with a Cell Phone reminds us even when we appear isolated, we are still connected.
