Blackboard Feature Spotlight: Date Management

Filed in Interesting Technologies, Showcase by on September 19, 2013

Setting availability dates manually has always been a bit of a hassle—you’d have to click the contextual menu for an item, edit it, and change the date there. That’s really time-consuming, especially if you’ve just migrated a whole new course site. Thankfully, a new Blackboard tool helps us shorten that process.

The Date Management tool allows an instructor to easily modify when course items become available and unavailable. Here’s how to use it.

You can access this tool in the Course Management sidebar, on the left of your course site.

Next, you’ll have to select which automated process or manual process you would like to use. You have three options:

  1. Use Course Start Date allows you to enter two dates. Enter your original course start date in the top box, and enter the desired new start date in the lower one. This will automatically adjust all dates in the course to match the new start date!
  2. Adjust by Number of Days will adjust every date in the course by the number of days specified.
  3. List all Dates for Review does not automatically adjust any dates, but will list them out entirely so that they can be manually modified.

The Date Management process takes a little bit of time to complete. You’ll receive an e-mail when it has completed.
Once this has completed, you’ll see a list of items appear. You can use the pencil icon highlighted in green below to change an individual date, or use the check boxes and the Adjust Dates button to change a number of dates at once.

This feature has been added to all Blackboard sites—you can find it in yours right now! It’s great for recently migrated course sites, so hopefully you’ll get some good use out of it!
