Feature Spotlight: Peer Review in Canvas

Filed in Canvas by on August 31, 2017

Do you want to allow students to provide feedback to other student’s assignment submissions? You can do this online in Canvas!

First, a few common questions about the Peer Review tool:

  1. Peer reviews can be assigned to show student names or display anonymously. (Professor and TA can still see who reviewed who, but it is anonymous to students)
  2. You can assign peer reviews manually or you can have Canvas assign them automatically.
  3. When a peer review has been assigned, students can view a notification in their Dashboard To Do sidebar or Activity Stream. Students will also receive an email notification.

How to do it

  1. In Course Navigation, click on Assignments
  2. Click the Add Assignment button
  3. Enter your assignment details as usual
  4. Under Submission Type, select Online (this is the only supported type of submission for Peer Review)
  5. Check the box next to File Uploads
  6. Check the box next to Require Peer Reviews
  7. Then choose whether you would like to manually or automatically assign peer reviews
  8. If you automatically assign peer reviews, the menu displays additional options
  9. Check the box next to Peer Reviews Appear Anonymously to make peer reviews anonymous (if you select this option, students will not be able to use Canvas DocViewer to write annotated feedback)
  10. Click Save to save a draft, or Save and Publish to make it available to students.
