Cast of Characters

Riedewhaan is the director of FCW. He has been the director for 11 years and has published numerous documents related to ECD during his time at FCW.

Nafeesa, the Operations Manager, has worked with FCW for approximately 10 years. She works closely with Riedewhaan and the programme coordinators to organise and prepare programmes.

Camelita, an employee at FCW, has a degree in psychology and holds psycho-social counselling sessions for parents and children engaged in FCW’s programs. She also helps run the programmes at the Vygieskraal Stadium.

Lameez is a programme leader at FCW. She helps run the programmes at the Vygieskraal Stadium.

Magrieta has been working with FCW for over 18 years. She is a programme leader and assists with the parenting programmes at the Vygieskraal Stadium.

Samané is an employee at FCW who helps run the parenting programmes at the Vygieskraal Stadium.

Ruwayda is a home visitor in the Vygieskraal settlement and works with a number of residents and families in Vygieskraal.

Shahied is the manager of the Vygieskraal Stadium. He is employed by the City of Cape Town Department of Sports and Recreation.

The Committee Members are a group of Vygieskraal residents with whom we worked closely throughout this project.

Bongani is a resident of Vygieskraal. He is currently unemployed, but has held a few jobs in the past. He has several children, some of whom are in their young teens. Bongani enjoys watching European soccer and other sports on TV.

Nokwanda is a resident of Vygieskraal and serves on a community committee within the shack section of Vygieskraal. She is a mother and grandmother, and is a trusted member of the community. Her biggest passion is cooking, and she loves muffins.

Sydwell is a resident of Vygieskraal. He is retired from the security industry, and currently receives a pension. He is a member of the community committee for the RDP housing section of Vygieskraal. Sydwell enjoys talking about politics and sports.

Grant is a worker at the Vygieskraal Stadium, and has lived in Vygieskraal for about 20 years. His interests include technology, music, and pop culture.

Vuyo is a resident of Vygieskraal. He is busy with two jobs and a family. Vuyo enjoys watching sports on TV in his spare time, particularly European soccer.

Bhuti is a community leader from the shack section of Vygieskraal. He also serves as a member of the Athlone Family in Focus (FIF) committee, and is dedicated to improving the quality of children’s lives in Vygieskraal.

Mureda is a community leader in Vygieskraal and operates a crèche in her home in the RDP housing section of Vygieskraal. Her crèche serves upwards of 70 young children, and is run with the help of several other teachers who also live in Vygieskraal.

David and Cammy are both residents of Vygieksraal and friends of our co-researchers. They attended a few of our meetings at the stadium and helped provide new perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in Vygieskraal.

Kariema, Marieta, and Lucy are residents of Vygieskraal who regularly attended the programmes at the stadium. They expressed interest in furthering ECD in the area and have made personal commitments to do their part in helping the children of the area.

Scott Jiusto is the director of the Cape Town Project Centre (CTPC), a professor in the department of Interdisciplinary and Global Studies at WPI, and was an advisor on this project.

Nicola Bulled is a professor in the department of Interdisciplinary and Global Studies at WPI, and was an advisor on this project.
