Job Search Blues!

Filed in From the Staff by on January 15, 2018

Hi guys,

peer

Hope you had a relaxing break and were able to unwind from the busy B term. Today I wanted to talk regarding the job search process. With the C term work load and the snow storms, the job search process can seem overwhelming where students often feel like that they are sending their resumes in an endless vacuum with no reply. While it can be an overwhelming process, especially for seniors there are some steps that you can take to make it more easier!

  1. Follow back with employers:

Before winter break you might have applied to a ton of job postings on handshake and company websites. If you haven’t received a reply up till now, follow back with an employer. Send an email to the address listed with the handshake posting or search in career shift to get an email address for an HR representative at the company. Sending a personalized email will not only remind the employer about your application but will also put your application above others who did not follow up. Be sure to attach your resume in the email and discuss why you would be the ideal candidate for the position in the body (sort of like your cover letter).

2.   Favorite Companies in Handshake:

January is the month where a lot of companies start their hiring process again. If you did not see job posting from your desired company in December and November, check again! Also favorite companies on Handshake where you would like to work. That way you can get an automatic update when a new position is posted.

3.   Revisit your application materials:

If you are not hearing back from employers, take a step back and revisit your application materials. Get your resume and cover letter critiqued at the CDC to make sure that you are conveying your experience in a way which matches the job description. Another way to showcase your skills is making a portfolio in digication! You can go to wpi.digication.com to start with your portfolio. A portfolio is a great way to convey your project work especially if you can images of your design/lab work. You can also add pages to show your on-campus involvement which will help the employers to determine whether you would be a good fit for the company.

Last but not least, don’t forget to take a step back and relax a bit in the process. Have a scheduled time everyday where you can apply for jobs and try not to think about it all of the time. If you have any questions feel free to email cdcpeeradvisors18@wpi.edu.

Happy Job Hunting!

-Ali
