STEM Week 2021

STEM learning is an every day experience at Al-Hamra Academy.

Grade 1 is studying Light. Our activities include understanding opaque, transparent, translucent: making our own ‘stained glass’ studying and tracing our shadows outside at different times during the day to see how they change.

During STEM Week, the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster will be running both FLL and FRC programs for elementary through high school. These programs give our members experience in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering – building and programming a robot. These programs are part of FIRST®, “FIRST® inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster will be participating in an hour of Scratch for our members to use coding to make their own creations. Scratch allows members to learn basic and advanced coding through interactive games, stories, and animations.

Inanimate Alice™ has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster to provide hands-on learning through a technology based game. Inanimate Alice™ promotes STEM literacy and a look into the world of video game design. “Inanimate Alice tells the story of a girl who dreams of one day becoming a video game designer. A tale of progressive complexity, readers become immersed in her story through episodes that demonstrate improving digital competency as Alice grows up developing the skills she needs to make her dreams become reality.” Members will be participating in the Inanimate Alice™ video game experience during STEM Week as part of a larger immersive program given throughout the year.

October 21, 2021 4:00pm – 5:00pm

Members will have the chance to learn about a green space in their community, Doyle Community Park. Our guide will show participants different parts of the ecosystem, native versus non-native plants and animals, and how the park is unique. Members will be immersed in environmental science through this hands-on experience, showing them a career path in STEM that you do not often see.

The Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg, Leominster, and Gardner are partnering with Mass Audubon to provide a look into a program called iPlan, where members can see how human interaction can change the natural world around them. This activity will involve many areas of STEM, such as environmental science, technology, and problem-solving. An educator from Mass Audubon will be joining the activity to help facilitate member engagement with iPlan.

Fourth grade students at Abby Kelley Foster Charter School will learn about the foundational elements of coding from Mass Academy students as they explore counting in binary and representing words and numbers in binary. Participants will create a physical representation of their learning by stringing beads together to spell out their name in ASCII code.

Fifth grade students at Abby Kelley Foster Charter School will learn the importance of providing clear and precise instructions as they program a “robot.” Students will learn about algorithms, loops, and functions as they use predetermined symbols to write code that directs a “robot” to build a structure. Along the way, students will also gain practice with debugging their code when something doesn’t go according to plan.

Sixth grade students at Abby Kelley Foster Charter School will get hands-on experience writing Scratch code to create dance animation that responds to user input and timed events. With support from Mass Academy student volunteers, the sixth grade students will have the opportunity to express their creativity as they add animations and special effects; and use controllers to change the dance moves or song.

Seventh grade students at Abby Kelley Foster Charter School will explore the concept of density and chemical reactions by making a lava lamp. With support from Mass Academy student volunteers, the seventh grade scientists will make observations about how oil and water interact with each other, and then discuss the reactions that take place when food coloring and alka seltzer tablets are added.

Robotics teams from Sutton High School, Algonquin Regional High School, Assabet Valley Regional Vocational High School will be at the Waters Farm Festival in Sutton MA demonstrating their FIRST Robots for all attendees. Students will show of their creations and talk about the programs and its importance of STEM.

FIRST Tech Challenge Students from Canton will demonstrate their robot built by their high school participants while also promoting STEM. Additionally, they will be conducting an E-waste Drive and an EV3 Outreach Event, all as part of the Canton Farmer’s Market at Canton High School.

Worcester Technical High School Web Development students will be visiting multiple elementary schools teh week of 10/18 – 10/22. They will visit 1/day and from 9-11am use a station rotation model to expose 5th and/or 6th graders to technology elements they use in their field through hands on activities (with an emphasis on computer science, computer hardware, networking and information technology) where the elementary students do the guided exploring through the guidance and leadership of the high school students.
