Digital Image Management

Glacier National Park’s museum collection preserves approximately 600,000 items related to Glacier’s natural and cultural history. This collection includes many historic images that document change over time. Historic images are the most commonly accessed and requested portion of the museum and archives collections. One collection of 12,800 images was digitized in the 2000s and made available to park personnel and researchers.

Glacier’s museum staff was seeking a software system to manage the digital images and associated data, and to make the collection more accessible to park personnel and researchers. The 2021 WPI team was responsible for initiating a feasibility study and making recommendations to the park for a digital image management system compliant with NPS IT standards, and incorporating a number of features.
