Gordon Library implemented a pilot program at the start of B Term to collect food in lieu of fines for overdue library items. Each nonperishable food item donated was equal to $5. Examples of acceptable items included cereal, rice, and large cans of vegetables.
At the end of B Term, 174 items were delivered to the Worcester County Food Pantry in Shrewsbury, MA. The amount of fines forgiven was $122.00.
C Term’s tally was 170 items of food with $92.00 in fines forgiven. This donation was taken to the Quinsigamond Village Food Pantry in Worcester, MA.
Our last donation of 252 items was delivered in May to Jeremiah’s Inn in Worcester, MA. Several large fines were forgiven for a total of $888.89!
This was a very successful pilot – we helped our patrons and three different local food pantries. We collected a total of 608 items and cleared $1,215.29 in fines.
Many of our students expressed their thanks and support of this program. As a result, we are very pleased to announce that we will be extending Food For Fines into the upcoming academic year! We are proud to be able to give back to the community on behalf of our students!
