A Term is an exciting time for the WPI campus, especially at the Gordon Library. Each year, the library staff hold an event during New Student Orientation (NSO) and this year’s event theme was Make your Future Brighter at WPI. On Wednesday, August 26, the new students were invited to explore the building and all the library has to offer. The staff manned their stations, eager to introduce new students to the collections, tools, technology, and instruction available to them year-round. Students had the opportunity to take self-guided and guided tours, enter to win prizes, and mingle with the professional staff as well as student staff. Before leaving, students were asked to answer the question “How will you make your future brighter?”
During this event, new students were encouraged to explore Gordon Library’s Curation, Preservation, and Archives, located on the Ground Level. Curation, Preservation, and Archives (CPA) actively collects, preserves, and makes available university records, historical and cultural collections, artwork, and objects of enduring value. In addition to staff offices and climate-controlled storage spaces, CPA consists of the Gladwin Gallery and the Fellman Dickens Reading Room, two dedicated spaces for WPI and public use. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions, perform scholarly research, or browse the institutional archives for personal enrichment.
In collaboration with Access Services and Research and Instruction staff, CPA staff designed and installed a special display to welcome new students during the library’s NSO event. The staff was inspired by the history of WPI’s commitment to project-based education. The Class of 2019 is made up of students from 37 states and 40 countries but regardless of each individual’s background, the class members all have one thing in common: the desire to make the world a better place, using WPI’s project-based curriculum as a strong foundation. This theme is present throughout the display, which includes several historical projects and WPI memorabilia.
All are welcome to view “Continue the Tradition: Make your Future Brighter at WPI” in the foyer entrance display case (Level 2) through the end of September.
