Congratulations to Shadi Bavar, the winner of the 2016 Robert Fellman Memorial Scholarship Prize! Her essay titled “The Power of Wealth: An Examination of the Effect of Money on Character” demonstrated a careful and thoughtful reading of text. In her essay, Ms. Bavar explores how the change in financial situation influences several individuals in Dickens’s novel Our Mutual Friend.
The Robert Fellman Memorial Scholarship Prize is awarded to a WPI undergraduate student for the best essay written about the life or work of the author Charles Dickens. The scholarship was established in the memory of the noted Dickensian Robert Fellman, who bequeathed his Charles Dickens collection to WPI in 1995.
Ms. Bavar has been invited to present the essay at the next meeting of the Worcester chapter of the Charles Dickens Fellowship on February 6 (the day before Dickens’s birthday), and will receive a cash prize of $100.
If you would like to learn more about the Fellowship or would like to attend the meeting, please contact Professor Joel B. Brattin.
