Qiang joined Fanglin’s lab in April 2024. He obtained his PhD in Chemical Science and Technology from the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Then he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Dionisios Vlachos’s lab in University of Delaware between 2019 to 2024. His research focuses on heterogeneous catalysis, involving three main areas: (i) studying the mechanisms of biomass catalytic transformations through DFT simulations, (ii) activating small molecules over single-atom catalysts, and (iii) developing and applying machine learning techniques to predict the energetics of surface species under electric fields.

Yilang joined in July 2024. He obtained his PhD in chemical engineering advised by Professor Prashant Deshlahra at Tufts University in 2021. Then he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Dionisios Vlachos’ lab at the University of Delaware from 2021 to 2024. In Fanglin’s lab, he conducts computational research on the project related to machine learning algorithm development for boosting muti-scale and multi-physics simulations of electrocatalysis and PFAS-free textile systems.

Dr. Jiaqi Yang joined Fanglin’s group in Sep. 2024, He obtained his PhD in Materials Engineering from Purdue University. His research focuses on material design using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Machine Learning, involving electrocatalysis, semiconductors, 2D material and perovskite design. In Fanglin’s lab, Jiaqi is developing active learning and deep learning algorithms for field-enhanced catalysis, plasma catalysis, electrocatalysis, and material discovery.

Lee joined the Fanglin Group in Jan. 2025, having received his PhD in Non-Thermal Plasmas and Applications from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests include fundamentals of non-thermal plasma discharges; plasma-surface interaction; plasma catalysis and numerical modeling. In his spare time he enjoys rock music, traveling and spending time with his family and two children.

Saleh Ahmat Ibrahim, PhD Student

Saleh joined Fanglin’s lab as a PhD student in the Spring of 2022. He earned a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering Department from Gazi University in August, 2021, where he worked on the design and characterization of innovative mesoporous catalysts for the steam reforming of acetic acid. Saleh completed his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering Department from Eskisehir Technical University in May, 2019. He is working on multi-scale and multi-physics simulations of ammonia synthesis using a tunable plasma catalytic reactor.

Yuting joined Fanglin’s lab as a PhD in Fall, 2022. She is expected to earn a M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering and Technology Department from Sun Yat-sen University in June, 2022, where she majored in multi-objective optimization and chemical manufacturing intensification in petroleum industries. Yuting finished her B. Eng. in Chemical Engineering in Dalian University of Technology in June, 2019. She is working on AI-assisted multi-scale simulations for electrocatalyst design.

Runze Zhao, PhD student

Runze joined Fanglin’s lab as a PhD student in the Fall of 2022. He earned a M.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from University of Pittsburgh in April 2022, where he successfully developed “Continuous Flow Synthesis of Zeolite ZSM-5 and Fe-ZSM-5”. Runze completed his B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology in December 2019 and B. Eng. in Petroleum Engineering from Northeast Petroleum University in June 2020. He is working on the multi-scale simulations the effect of static and dynamic electric fields on catalysis.

Pragyansh Singh, PhD student

Pragyansh joined Fanglin’s lab in the fall of 2023. He completed his M.Sc. (Chemistry) in June of 2022 from IIT Madras. For his master’s thesis, he worked on ab-initio calculation-based modeling of molecular magnets. Thereafter, he joined IISER Kolkata to work on a research project of “Natural transition orbital directed excited state study of molecules in the magnetic field.” His keen interest in working on practical systems with real-world applications has now led him to pursue research in the field of machine learning-based computational electrostatic catalysis.

PhD Students:

Mingyu Wan joined Prof. Fanglin Che’s group in Fall 2020 and earned his Ph.D. in May 2024. He holds an M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University and a B.Eng. in Energy Engineering from North University of China. His doctoral research focused on multiscale simulations and machine learning for catalyst design in sustainable energy.
Mingyu received the AIChE Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Travel Award and the Kokes Award from the North American Catalysis Society in 2022. During his Ph.D., he published five first/co-first author papers in journals including Nature Communications, JACS, JACS Au, and ChemCatChem. In September 2024, he will join Wuhan University of Science and Technology as an Assistant Professor.
