Travel

The Morocco Project Center is located in Rabat, on the Atlantic coast. Here, you’re in the middle of everything: you’re within a few hours by train from many of the cities you’ll want to visit. Morocco’s train system is extensive and fairly cheap; you’ll have the chance to travel on your weekends.

As you travel across the country, you’ll likely begin to marvel at the country’s rich diversity: there are multiple Moroccos with which you can choose to interact and from which you can choose to learn. It’s got mountains and valleys, deserts and coastal spots. You can ski in Ifrane in the winter or surf in Agadir or Essouaria in the spring. Travel to Chefchaouen and experience the complex culture of the Amazigh: Morocco’s indigenous people, often referred to as Berber.

The Medina (Old City) in Fes is well over 1000 years old; in its center, you’ll fine Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, the oldest continuously degree granting university in the world, founded around 870 CE by Fatima al Fihri. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest urban space in the world with no cars. Adjacent the Medina is Fes Jdid (“New Fes”), founded in the 11th century and home to one of the oldest Mellahs (Jewish neighborhoods) in Morocco.

Take the train west to Meknes and, from there, make your way to Volubilis, the well-preserved Roman ruins, or to Azrou, where you can hike to the Toumliline Monastery just outside of town. Take the train south to Marrakech and peruse the famous Jamaa El F’na, an open-air theater where musicians, magicians, fortunetellers and snake charmers still exhibit their craft.

And, of course, you may decide to stay in Rabat, where you can surf for a mere $10 (wetsuit included) and meander from cafe to cafe, sipping coffee, tea or avocado juice and watching Morocco through the eyes of the Moroccans sitting beside you.

Students tend to travel most weekends, taking full advantage of their time in the country to learn about its diversity. Join a group of your WPI peers in a 24-hour a day study of the history, culture, politics, peoples and geography of this unique country. Check your preconceptions at the airport right before you board the plane and embark on this life-altering journey.
