ACRC Begins Research on New Aluminum Alloy Projects

Industrial members  of the Advanced Casting Research Center (ACRC) have selected two new projects to be conducted by WPI reseachers. The projects will expand the ACRC research portfolio in the areas of process development and the development of new alloy systems.

  • 60-40-10 Cast Aluminum Alloy.  This project will focus on developing an aluminum alloy system that improves the toughness of sand castings in order to enhance the ability of designers to achieve weight reduction without sacrificing part performance.

Residual Stresses in Aluminum Alloy Castings.  The objective of this project is to understand the factors that affect residual stress in castings and to develop data and methodology that can be used in simulations to predict the magnitude and sense of residual stresses that form in aluminum castings during solidification.
