This project aimed to create a programmable musical instrument inspired by engine cylinder design that uses Helmholtz Resonance to generate pitched notes. By reimagining a familiar mechanical system—the internal combustion engine— our team sought to transform something common into a unique music-making machine.
Rather than using multiple fixed-pitch tubes, the team focused on creating variable pitch capability within individual PVC pipes. By controlling the volume of air within each pipe using piston actuation, the notes produced from a single tube were variable. This approach increased mechanical complexity while expanding musical possibilities.
