Summary of Interview
Erik D’Attilio is a grocery bagger at Market Basket in Haverhill, Massachusetts. After the pandemic struck, his and his coworkers’ workloads increased to over 45 hours a week, mostly due to short-staffing. When his employer began distributing masks, one of his coworkers “left because he didn’t want to wear [a mask]”. Erik and his remaining coworkers are wearing their masks and gloves in addition to social distancing. Erik has needed to enforce social distancing among some unwilling customers, which has frustrated him. However, he feels that most coworkers, thanking all the cashiers for risking their health. The social distancing requirements have also made Erik feel lonelier at work, as he can no longer socialize with his coworkers. Erik hopes for people to respect the severity of the pandemic and follow the restrictions imposed to stop its spread.
