Primary & Secondary School
Primary & Secondary School refers to the schooling children and adolescents receive from ages 5 to 18. They do not include post-secondary schools like vocational institutions, colleges, or universities.
Why Schooling is Important
Receiving an education through childhood and adolescence is critical for the development and cultivation of the brain. Information learned while young is often retained for longer. Skills developed when students are younger often require less time than if they started at an older age. Skills in areas like reading, writing, playing music, speaking non-native languages are best learned at a younger age.
Children should be sent to school and given ample time to study and complete schoolwork at home. There should also be time built into the day for hobbies and breaks.
If your children are not enrolled in school, and enrolling them is not possible, there are other options to help them succeed.
Literacy
Learning how to read and write are two of the most important skills to develop at a young age. While it is not essential for survival, reading and writing can open many doors for people as they grow older. It is important to have your child attend school to learn, and if you or someone at your home knows how to read or write, then they should also practice at home. Reading and writing are easy to learn and difficult to master, but with time these skills are very useful. There are many activities that promote literacy:
- Start young
Children who are literate do better in school, have better employment prospects later in life, and even have a healthier self-image!
2. Teaching literacy shouldn’t be a chore
Forcing any skill is often met with little to no progress, and can cause a child to learn even less. If your child shows absolutely no interest in learning, do not force it. Instead, take things slowly and introduce topics over longer periods of time.
3. Talk to your children all the time, even if they don’t understand
Talking and communication are the cornerstones of literacy. Even if children can’t understand what you’re saying, repetition of words and phrases, whether simple or complex can “stick” with them. Eventually, they will learn how to use them as well.
4. Read to your children often
Make reading a habit, often before bed, after a meal, or whenever it’s convenient. Make a schedule and stick to it. Reading books is great because authors often use words and phrases that aren’t normally spoken every day, but are important to learn.
5. Let your children take the helm
Give your child the opportunity to read something themselves, or to tell a story. If they can, have them write it at the same time as they’re saying it. Giving children the ability to take their language into their own hands can be very rewarding for them to learn how to dictate the language themselves. Ask them questions along the way to have them think about what they may be writing, reading, or saying.
6. Remember to teach sounds
Language is a lot more than just words and phrases. It’s expressions, sounds, attitude, speed, etc. Whenever you’re teaching communication skills to be sure to teach them all the different components.
