Food and culture are deeply intertwined in Thessaloniki, earning the city its distinction as Greece’s “culinary capital” and recognition as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Historically, Thessaloniki’s strategic position as a Mediterranean port and its role as a crossroads for trade and migration have allowed it to absorb a rich tapestry of Greek, Ottoman, Jewish, Armenian, Balkan, and Mediterranean influences. Over the years, WPI students have explored the historical significance of food and how migration continues to shape food choices.
