Welcome to the Albania Project Center

Since 2013, the Albania Project Center has conducted over 40 student research projects, partnering with government agencies and non-profit organizations on a diverse array of topics such as cultural heritage preservation, rural livelihoods, food tourism, wastewater management, flood risk reduction, and climate change mitigation, among others.  All the projects (and the entire student experience in Albania) offer wonderful, real-world opportunities for WPI students and provide our project partners with valuable data and perspectives on pressing problems and opportunities in Tirana and in other regions of Albania.  Students teams are based in Tirana but undertake fieldwork throughout the country.

  • Collecting data on flood impacts in the Shkoder region as part of an outreach strategy to reduce flood risk (Partner: GIZ)
  • Developing training materials and identifying opportunities to integrate the KinderPitch early education program in Albanian schools (Partner: Lorik Cana 5 Foundation)
  • Touring a brewery to assess possibilities to reduce wastewater to benefit the environment and to reduce production costs (Partner, Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania, SHUKALB)
  • Students constructed a scale model of the National Theatre in Tirana as a “memory box” into which people could submit written stories describing their times at the theatre and what it meant to them (Partners: Ottonomy and Cultural Heritage without Borders-Albania)
  • WPI team worked with young adults with disabilities to further social inclusion through art and other means (Partner: UNDP—Leave No One Behind programme)
  • Surveying pharmacies in Tirana to determine waste management practices and to identify incentives to encourage better outcomes (Partner: Environmental Center for Development Education and Networking, EDEN)
  • Students created a digital model of Spac prison as a vehicle for public deliberation about the legacy of the communist regime that ruled Albania for nearly 50 years (Partner: Cultural Heritage without Borders-Albania)
  • Interviewing aromatic and medicinal plant processors to learn about more sustainable harvesting practices in the Vyosa watershed ( Partner: Eco-Albania).
  • WPI students helped to develop the first robotics competition in Albania and are seen here working with Albanian high school students to refine component design (Partner: Harry Fultz Institute)
