Upcoming in Fall 2025

Welcome back to campus, all!

AWM is excited to start up again for the 2025-26 school year. Two of our exec board members from the last academic year, Caitlin Ho (PR Chair) and Natalie Tierney (Vice President), graduated, and we welcome two new members, Mia Zheng (Vice President) and Virginia Iadanza (Treasurer)!

Our first gathering of the year will be our annual Welcome Event, which will be on Wednesday, August 27 on the Campus Center back patio. We’ll have pizza and games. New and returning members can drop in anytime between 12 pm and 2 pm to catch up and learn more about the goings-on of AWM.

This fall, we’ll be holding general body meetings every first Thursday of the month (Sep, Oct, Nov, and Dec) to provide a regular space for members to socialize in a casual setting. Our first GBM, on September 4, will center on member introductions, idea sharing, and a DIY SET activity.

In addition to our usual AWM Speaker Series, where invited speakers are encouraged to discuss their journeys as women mathematicians into careers in academia and industry along with their research interests and mathematical contributions, we’ll be running regular professional development workshops, with topics this semester to include typesetting in Overleaf (an introduction for the uninitiated) and creating a professional website. (Dates and times pending.)

A new program for the school year is a semi-regular book club, which will meet every two to three weeks on Tuesday afternoons to discuss a selected article, essay, or book that pertains to developments and topics in mathematics, the culture of mathematics, and/or the work of women in mathematics. In the fall, our reads will include:

  • Excerpts from Fifty Years of Women in Mathematics: Reminiscences, History, and Visions for the Future of AWM
  • Proof, by David Auburn
  • Closing the Gap: The Quest to Understand Prime Numbers, by Vicky Neale

So, lot’s happening! For more detail, keep an eye out for emails from the exec board and notifications in myWPI.
