For our C-Term GBM, we organized an info session for new and returning members to learn about this year’s SK Day, taking place on Saturday, April 12, and ways that they could be involved in its planning and execution.
For our last event of the fall semester, we collaborated with WPI’s Art and Design Club for a paper crafts night, complete with cocoa and cookies.
Dr. Becca Thomases is Professor and Department Chair of Mathematics at Smith College. She visited WPI in November to deliver a colloquium talk titled “Micro-organism locomotion in viscoelastic fluids.” AWM was honored to host a coffee hour with her before the talk!
Every Friday from 12:00-2:00pm, ODIME has free, freshly baked cookies in the OASIS House. AWM co-sponsored the November 8 event in B-Term 2024!

This was a fun social event organized with WPI’s Crochet Club! Students enjoyed coffee, pastries, and conversation while learning how to crochet hyperbolic surfaces. This event was inspired by the creative work of Dr. Daina Taimiņa, retired adjunct associate professor of mathematics at Cornell University. (Read more about her work here.)
On Friday, September 20, we had our A-Term general body meeting. Students brainstormed ideas for the upcoming term and discussed our WPI experiences with Lauren Feldman, Assistant Director for Gender Equity and Sexuality at ODIME.
AWM hosted coffee, snacks, and conversation with Dr. Hom, who was awarded the 2024 Levi L. Conant Prize for her paper “Getting a handle on the Conway knot” (Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, 59 (2021), 19–29). She delivered the 2024 Levi L. Conant Lecture at WPI.
The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) hosted its first event of the school year on Thursday, September 5th from 12-2pm. Our annual Welcome Events provides a great opportunity for students to introduce themselves and/or connect with returning members.
Sonia Kovalesky (SK) Day is an AWM community outreach event to encourage middle school girls to continue studying or appreciate math! See the attached flyer for more details. This year, SK Day will be held on Saturday, April 6th at WPI. The day is filled with fun activities led by chapter volunteers for the students to engage with math.
