Project Abstract
Massachusetts communities rely on wetlands for clean water, flood control, and habitat; however, unclear records and limited resources undermine effective protection. Our project evaluated wetland buffer-zone projects in MA, with the MA Rivers Alliance. We analyzed permits, mapped sites in ArcGIS, interviewed conservation staff, and tested AI for document review. We found frequent data gaps, inconsistent compliance with regulations, and limited staff capacity. We recommend improving the state database portal and forms, standardizing coordinates and areas, and expanding public guidance and enforcement support.
