Transfer credits, non-US degrees and ESL

Can I transfer previous graduate courses into a WPI Graduate Certificate?

Pending faculty approval, WPI will allow one relevant graduate course taken at another university to be applied toward a graduate certificate.

  • This course must not have been used as part of another earned degree.
  • This course must be approved by WPI faculty.
  • The decision for transfer courses is made after a student has been admitted to a program.
  • You will be provided with a simple form to request transfer credits during the application process.

What should I do if my degree was not earned in the United States?

WPI asks that you officially apply and receive a decision on your application in advance of taking any courses. The application process will require that your university transcripts are translated by an official 3rd party translation service such as:

Note that the translated transcipts must be sent to WPI directly from the 3rd party vendor in a signed, sealed envelope.

What if English is not my first language?

The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS), or the Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) is required for International students who come from countries where English is not their first language.

The minimum scores for admission are:

  • TOEFL:

    • 223 (computer based test)
    • 563 (paper-based test)
    • 84 (internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 7.0 overall band score with no sub-score lower than 6.5

Students with less than two years of college in the U.S. will be required to prove their English proficiency.
