Commencement

Fall Career Fair

Registration is now open for WPI’s Fall Career Fair, taking place on September 16, 2015, from 12 to 4pm. The event is a great opportunity to connect with WPI’s bright and talented undergraduate and graduate students regarding full-time positions and 2016 summer internships and to increase your organization’s visibility on campus. We expect to host 180 companies and over 2,000 students and alumni. Please note that space is limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis.

OCI Day

WPI is excited to host our first On-Campus Interview Day on September 17 in the Rubin Campus Center Odeum. Participating employers should plan to create their own schedule of students from the career fair held the day prior. Requesting OCI space can be done in your career fair registration or Job Finder account. Once in your account, select the “On-Campus Interviews (OCI)” tab and request a new schedule for “On-Campus Interview Day, September 17.” You will receive an email confirmation within two business days and a separate email with additional logistics about a week before the event. This event is open to all employers participating in our Fall Career Fair on September 16. There is no charge for on-campus interviews.

Report-a-Hire Survey

Have you recently hired a WPI student or graduate for a full-time, part-time, internship, or co-op position? Please let us know about them! This information is extremely helpful as we calculate our outcomes statistics for WPI students and recent graduates. Fill out the report-a-hire survey.

Resumazing

If you are interested in interacting with WPI talent prior to the Career Fair, consider participating in our resume critiquing event on September 10, 2015. Resumazing is an educational program during which company volunteers come to campus to critique student resumes to help them prepare for the Fall Career Fair. We ask for a two-hour commitment between the hours of 12 and 6pm, and you will have the opportunity to interact with students of all degrees and disciplines. If you are interested in participating, please contact Bailey Rand at brand@wpi.edu or call 508-831-5260.

DOL Unpaid Intern Ruling

Earlier this month, the US Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit issued a strong ruling against the Department of Labor’s six “tests” for unpaid internships. The ruling vacated a lower court’s ruling that the unpaid interns were to be classified as employees and greatly reduced the likelihood of the class action status of the case, providing greater flexibility to companies and more opportunities for students.

Judge Walker wrote for the Appellate Court panel that the judges “agree with defendants (Fox Searchlight), that the proper question is whether the intern or the employer is the primary beneficiary of the relationship.” This single test provides employers with more leeway to use unpaid interns legally when the work serves an educational purpose.

Most WPI students receive, and seek, paid internships. However, given the atmosphere of recruiting and the view of unpaid students on projects, this decision may relax the pressures some corporations feel in sponsoring projects or unpaid internships for credit. The Fox Searchlight Pictures case will now be decided by the lower court utilizing the Appellate Court standard rather than the Department of Labor standard.
