The inside of the newly refurbished Stratton Hall

From the Desk of Pamela (Giasson) Lynch

Although most folks think it’s quiet on The Hill during the summer months, that’s rarely the case. The following is a sample of recent WPI activities:

From University Advancement: A Milestone Goal

WPI’s generous donors helped achieve the milestone fundraising goal of $42 million this year, exceeding the university’s fiscal year goal by $2 million! WPI is currently only $70 million from achieving the overall philanthropic goal for Beyond These Towers: The Campaign for Worcester Polytechnic Institute. These gifts have supported student scholarships and fellowships, campus capital improvements, research initiatives, and overall operating expenses across the campus and the globe. This campaign success is a testament to the many loyal alumni who support their alma mater so generously.

On Campus: Facilities

The largest project the Facilities Office oversaw this past summer was a complete renovation of Stratton Hall. In addition to upgrading the building’s lighting, HVAC, windows, roof, and insulation to make it more energy efficient, it created new classrooms and restrooms. As part of the university’s commitment to access and accessibility, an enclosed connection was built between Stratton Hall and the neighboring Laurie A. Leshin Global Project Center, with an elevator and stairwell that can be accessed from either building. (See related story.)

Other summer projects included building additional lab space and reconfiguring existing lab space at 15 Sagamore Road and the Washburn Shops, as well as replacing the roof of the Rubin Campus Center.

Work to improve WPI’s overall energy efficiency is underway in many buildings around campus—upgrading lighting fixtures and controls, replacing or updating HVAC systems, replacing old windows, repairing or replacing roofs—and, as appropriate, preparing them for future solar arrays.

Off Campus: Alumni Events

Alumni events sponsored by the Alumni Association and hosted by alumni are engaging alumni across the United States! Thanks to all involved in Boston, in Denver, in Portland, Ore., in Portsmouth, N.H., and in Washington, DC. Special gratitude to our hosts, Dean of Engineering John McNeill, Lindsey McKan ’09, Morgan Boyd ’15, and Tom Cappelletti ’87.

Homecoming 2024

I hope you were able to make it to The Hill for Homecoming in September. It’s always fantastic to catch up with students and fellow alumni, especially when the campus is lively.

Please make sure the Office of Lifetime Engagement has your current contact information on file, including your email address, so we can keep you informed about upcoming events. Contact them at 508-831-5600, alumni-office@wpi.edu.

Thanks for all you do for your alma mater.

Pamela
