How are OER and open pedagogy related? A great place to begin thinking about this question is through Robin DeRosa’s work. Robin is currently Director of the Open Learning & Teaching Collaborative (Open CoLab) at Plymouth State University, where they focus on “instructional design, open education, interdisciplinary learning, and increasing the public impact of the academy.”
Last month Robin gave an outstanding 60-minute talk to participants in the AAC&U Institute on OER, “Pedagogy and the Purpose of Open.” (There’s a recorded video & also a full transcript!). The first 20 minutes is all about affordability issues (important!) and then she gets into open pedagogy at around minutes 21-22. Also available through the AAC&U site are Robin’s slides and a group of links shared throughout her talk.
Here are a few quotes from her talk:
“…there’s a lot more we could do here than just lower the cost of books….it can actually be quite a bit more powerful…”
“…open pedagogy…strives towards social justice, encourages learners to drive, and sees knowledge as connected and collaborative.”
“…I started seeing how excited students were getting when they were recognizing themselves in [the] curriculum and when they were participating in [the] curriculum in that sort of representational way…”
