Apelian Elected to Advisory Committee of China’s State Key Lab

Diran Apelian has been elected to serve on the Advisory Committee of China’s State Key Laboratory for Solidification Processing.  Professors C.T. Liu and Apelian are the only two international members of the Committee.  The State Key laboratory at Northwestern Polytechnic is China’s principal center for casting research.  The Laboratory’s annual budget is over $10 million per year and over 300 students are working on both fundamentals of solidification as well as processing methods.  With this appointment, Apelian further strengthens ties with Northwestern Polytechnic, where he received an honorary doctorate in 1996.  Pictured above are (from left to right): Prof. Zhou, foremost academician in China in metals processing, Prof. Apelian, Prof. Li of Harbin, and Prof. Weidong Huang, Director of the State Key Laboratory, and newly elected President of China Foundry Association (2011-2016).   Over the years, WPI has hosted and recruited many top Northwestern Polytechnic graduates and faculty.  Dr. Qingyue Pan who was Research Professor at ACRC for 6 years and worked on SSM processing was a student of Prof. Huang.  Dr. Libo Wang, Research Professor at WPI, was originally a Lecturer at Northwestern Polytechnic when he joined ACRC as a visiting Professor.
