MPI’s vision is to be the premier university-based research facility dedicated to improving manufacturing and materials recovery and recycling. MPI brings fundamental understanding to existing processes, develops new methods and addresses management-technology interface issues.
MPI benefits from input and engagement across the spectrum of the metal processing industry and technology supply chain – primary and secondary producers of metal, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, manufacturers and processors (casters, parts producers, heat treaters) and end users.

Thermatool and Timken Collaborate for a Financial Win
Thermatool, a producer of Pipe and Bar Harden and Temper Lines, asked CHTE to model applications of its Precision Slot Quench Ring. The application is a critical heat-treating method for the industrial bearing and specialty steel company of fellow CHTE member Timken. Thermatool was able to show, through the simulation modeling and technical knowledge of CHTE, that its product could meet Timken’s needs. CHTE provided an avenue of communication between the companies that allowed them to perform trusted independent analysis with everyone’s best interests in mind.
MPI’s Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) helps the U.S. Army Research Lab provide better military application materials through response simulation.
