The Interactive Qualifying Project

What qualities do companies value from WPI students and alumni? The abilities to work in teams, communicate, solve problems, innovate with technology, and lead projects are all ranked highly in our discussions with employers.

The WPI Project Plan assists students in developing many of these qualities through the university’s distinctive project-based curriculum. Prior to the Major Qualifying Project (MQP), the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) takes place during the junior year. It is designed to impel students to think “outside the box.” Teams of 3-7 students across all majors collaborate on campus, or at project centers located around the globe, while using science, technology, and engineering to solve problems that impact real people and communities.

When asked about a recent challenge during an interview, upperclassmen will often cite their Interactive Qualifying Project. Students learn to finesse their research skills—determining the scope of their project and completing their objectives within a seven-week timeframe. Afterwards, students present their findings and proposed solutions to the sponsoring organization, faculty, and their peers.

An example of a recent IQP is titled “Evaluating Business Opportunities with Solar Energy in Un-Electrified Areas in Namibia.” After carefully reviewing background, cultural, and technical literature, students spent time in and around Namibia observing facilities, conducting surveys, and determining there is economic feasibility to integrate solar energy sources in an area where 60% of the population is off-grid according to Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The students faced a wide-range of challenges, but by working together, they were able to focus on a project that was significant in research as well as meaningful to the people of Namibia. Because of this particular team’s superior conception, execution and presentation, it won the prestigious President’s IQP Award. For more information about WPI projects please click here.
