A Visit to China’s Gansu Province

China’s Gansu Province is home of the world’s largest nickel mine and well known for its non-ferrous mineral resources. Gansu is located in the northwest of the China. It lies between the Tibetan and Huangtu plateaus, and borders Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, and Ningxia to the north, Xinjiang and Qinghai to the west, Sichuan to the south, and Shaanxi to the east. The Yellow River passes through the southern part of the province. Gansu has a population of 26 million; the southwestern corner of Gansu is home to a large Tibetan population. The capital is Lanzhou, located in the southeast part of the province. On December 16, Prof. Apelian was invited to meet with the Vice-Governor of Gansu Province along with Prof. Yuandong Li, Director of the State Key Laboratory for Non-Ferrous Metals.
