ACRC Announces Two New Research Projects

ACRC members voted to begin work on two new research projects focused on process development and new alloy systems:

  • 60-40-10 Cast Aluminum Alloy. This project will focus on developing an aluminum alloy system that improves the toughness of sand castings in order to enhance the ability of designers to achieve weight reduction without sacrificing part performance. Research will be conducted by Postdoc YangYang Fan with Diran Apelian as advisor.
  • Residual Stresses in Aluminum Alloy Castings. The objective of this project is to understand the factors that affect residual stress in castings and to develop data and methodology that can be used in simulations to predict the magnitude and sense of residual stresses that form in aluminum castings during solidification. Postdoc Eunkyung Lee will be working on the project with Brajendra as advisor.
