MTE594, The Metallurgy of Steel
Due to popular demand, in the spring of 2011 Rick Sisson offered an elective course on the metallurgy of steel to 41 seniors and graduate students. Sisson reports that the students were very interested in learning a little steel making and a lot of processing. They were particularly interested in heat treating and surface treating. About 20 of the students were seniors in ME who took the course as an elective to learn more about materials specifications and tolerances. In addition to memorizing the Fe – Fe3C phase diagram, student teams developed reports on specifications, applications, and heat treating of selected alloys.
