Designing My Future:  A STEM Career Night for Youth and Families
Hosted by: WPI, Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, QCC and Worcester Public Schools

Description: Designing My Future: a STEM Career Fair for Youth and Families is a chance to have youth, adult career changers, and families speak with industry professionals from a wide variety of STEM careers. They will learn from them about what they do in their jobs, as well as about their pathways into the field and things they might have struggled with as youth. Local higher education and K-12 STEM opportunities will also be in the room. At 6:00pm there will be a dance performance by the Boys and Girls Club dance team followed immediately by a conversation with local STEM professionals about the many pathways into STEM careers. We highly recommend this panel for high school students, parents/guardians, and adults interested in changing careers.

See Yourself in STEM Game Jam
Hosted by: MassDigi at Becker College

Description:  A game jam (making a game within a time limit using a prescribed set of tools) is a great way for young people of any experience level to try their hand at building a game – from coding on up. MassDiGI, working with the Becker College student game development club and a Becker College professor, is offering a 6 hour game jam for high school students, teachers and parents across the state this Mass. STEM Week.  Interested students, teachers and parents will spend their time creating a digital game from assets that the club provides using the Game Maker software engine*. This engine has a simple and intuitive workflow that students of all backgrounds will be able to easily pick up.  For those participating online there will be a dedicated communications channel with all Becker student club members so that if anyone participating online runs into any problems they can be helped promptly.  The club will provide all that participate with a game jam kit, this will provide people with the engine along with any assets that the people may need. The theme of the game jam will be See Yourself in STEM. And, lastly, after the conclusion of the game jam and to the extent possible, the games will be posted online for all to play.

Exploring Modeling at the EcoTarium

The STEM Education Center at WPI and the EcoTarium have teamed to create this PD that unpacks the second NGSS practice: Developing and Using Models. In the morning, participants will examine a variety of ways to model/represent a phenomenon and discuss the ways that scientists, engineers, and mathematicians use models in their daily work. Participants will then engage in a hands on engineering activity related to developing and using models. In the afternoon, participants will explore the planetarium as a model and then go on a scavenger hunt to find models in the museum that correlate to their STE standards. Blackstone Valley STEM Conference

Description: This exciting program introduces approximately 100 seventh- and eighth-graders from Blackstone Valley schools to the many STEM careers and allows them to meet inspiring professionals in the STEM fields. The students cycle through three hands-on workshops and attend a keynote lecture and closing activity while spending the day on a college campus. Afternoon programming for parents provides information on early college planning and paying for college. The conference is jointly presented by Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, and is held on Cummings School’s North Grafton campus. It’s Not a Box!

Description: The Worcester Child Development Head Start Program will be using the book, Not a Box, by Antoinette Portis to guide their STEAM exploration for the celebration of MA STEM Week! This week long event will include visits from local builders and architects who will work cooperatively with the children to exchange design ideas and learn new engineering techniques. Girls VEX Robotics

Description: The Girls Robotics Team meets throughout the year to learn about engineering and robotics.  The goal of this organization is to encourage younger girls to stay interested in what they love.  This is achieved by creating a group of strong and similar minds, ultimately pursuing the goal of developing robots as a team.  WPI Students serve as mentors and teachers throughout the year, developing a constant support system of role models in the field of robotics.

SJC Drums hosts Worcester’s Innovation Pathways and Worcester Vocation High School’s Advanced Manufacturing Students
Hosted by: SJC Drums

Description:  SJC Drums of Southbridge MA, creators of fine, handcrafted custom drums played by many top names in the music industry, will be hosting students from Worcester’s Innovation Pathways and Worcester Vocation High School’s Advanced Manufacturing Programs.  Students will learn about SJC’s humble beginnings and some employees’ unusual entries into manufacturing.  They will tour the company’s new manufacturing location and hear from some key employees.   SJC will be providing students with a real world challenge – and asking their help to solve some issues that have impacted their manufacturing process.  Students will meet with SJC personnel at a later date to share their ideas and solutions.
