Students will then apply what they have learned to an open-ended design challenge: Can you help the Gingerbread Boy get across the river safely and quickly?

CUMMINGS SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AT TUFTS UNIVERSITY AND BLACKSTONE VALLEY EDUCATION FOUNDATION
Blackstone Valley STEM Conference
This exciting program introduces approximately 100 seventh- and eighth-graders from Blackstone Valley schools to the many STEM careers and allows them to meet inspiring professionals in the STEM fields. The students cycle through three hands-on workshops, attend a keynote lecture, and participate in an electrifying closing activity while spending the day on a college campus. Afternoon programming for parents provides information on early college planning and paying for college. The conference is jointly presented by Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, and is held on Cummings School’s North Grafton campus.

Elmwood Grade 3 STEAM Week
Elmwood School will be participating in STEAM week by sharing in common learning activities each day. Grade 3 will be participating in the following activities:
Monday: Science Students will be using a star map and own imaginations to create their own constellation and write a story about it.
Tuesday: Technology Students will use Scrtach jr to create a simple computer programs using visual instructions and tools.
Wednesday: Engineering Students will explore the effects of natural hazards, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and dust storms. Then, they will design multiple solutions to keep a house from blowing away in a windstorm, using every day classroom materials.
Thursday: Art Students will explore texture and the chemical reaction of absorption by using watercolors and salt to create a painting of a tree.
Friday: Math Students will work on a variety of problem solving activities using a variety of math tools.

Operation Welcome Mat
How do you draw creatures in? By laying out the welcome mat, of course! Throughout the year, fourth-grade and fifth-grade students will create a variety of habitat enhancements to make the schoolyard a more welcoming place for people and pollinators. During STEM week, fifth-grade students will take younger children out to test the latest additions to our science garden and nature trail: a talking garbage can, a musical bridge, an arch that welcomes visitors, and more!

College & Career Exploration Day is designed to expose high school students to the career opportunities within the life sciences industry, while providing an understanding of the connection between their academic choices and career path. The event will showcase a wide array of educational opportunities and diverse fields of study in college life sciences programs. Through rapid-paced mentoring sessions, students will learn first-hand from industry volunteers about their unique qualifications, educational backgrounds, and interests that brought them to biotechnology and the contribution each of their roles make in this evolving industry.

Stimulating STEM Interest

The Women’s Research and Mentorship Program (WRAMP) exposes young women to positive female role models with a STEM background who are pursuing an undergraduate, masters, doctorate, or post-doctoral degree. Each student will be matched with an undergraduate and graduate student to work on a research project in a mentoring setting.
