Pro Tip Tuesday: Sorting Canvas Gradebook in Excel
Do you use Excel spreadsheets in conjunction (or in place of) the Canvas Gradebook?
Canvas’ sorting mechanism eccentricities, combined with students’ ability to choose a preferred name can sometimes pose a challenge when importing and exporting in and out of Excel. For example, Canvas will alphabetize last names with apostrophes differently than Excel will. But, there’s a workaround!
In Excel, simply sort your students by a different column. The SIS Login ID column (WPI username) provides a cleaner sort alphabetically, and will prevent any issues that arise from the differences between the systems organization/spelling of the Last Name.
