In preparation for MA STEM Week, the STEM Education Center is offering two free 1-hour sessions that will introduce educators to the I am STEM – STEM I am lesson library. This library of lessons focuses on solving problems in books and is designed to empower PK-5 students to become proud problem solvers. All lessons are aligned with grade-level ELA and math/STE standards, can be done in the classroom or remotely, and use every day and recyclable materials. Our free online webinars will introduce you to the problem solving process, show you how to navigate the library and allow you to briefly explore grade level lessons with colleagues.

Worcester Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative (WCMC) Monthly Sampling and Analysis Event

The Worcester Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative (WCMC) is a group of volunteer community scientists interested in learning about how cyanobacteria (blue green algae), which have become an increasing public health concern, are affecting their local waterbodies. Once a month, these volunteers collect water samples from over 20 lakes and ponds in and around Worcester and bring them to the lab to be examined using a variety of analysis, including under a microscope. The group is helping to develop rapid methods to determine if waterbodies are safe for recreation. Come and see what they are finding and learn how you can be involved! No prior experience is required. October 16th will be their final sampling date of the year, but we will be back at it next April and looking for new participants.

Guided Hike at Doyle Community Park: Oct. 21, 2021

Members will have the chance to learn about a green space in their community, Doyle Community Park. Our guide will show participants different parts of the ecosystem, native versus non-native plants and animals, and how the park is unique. STARBASE Hanscom AFB first hosted the interns from the UTeach program at the University of Massachusetts Boston in the spring of 2019. UTeach is a university-based STEM teacher preparation program that addresses the need for highly qualified STEM science and math teachers. The STARBASE-UTEACH Internship experiences helped prospective teachers gain confidence and experiences in teaching as well as providing a real-world perspective in which to frame their academic learning. The partnership between UTeach and STARBASE Hanscom aims to develop and refine ways to help teachers and students in all professions in the STEM teaching and learning enterprise to pursue best practices to the benefit of all students.
This year to celebrate the STEM week, STARBASE and UTeach Boston are partnering to allow prospective teachers in UTeach to experience how STEM teaching and learning is for everyone. UTeach students will join the current STARBASE class live and in progress on Zoom.

UMass ScienceLIVE is opening up a virtual tour of multiple scientist and engineer labs followed by live Q&A sessions for middle and high school students across the district. There will be 1 half hour session each day that multiple schools will join.

Students and their families will interact with unique hands-on STEM activities that include, Robotics, Repair a Heart Valve Design, Tower Building Challenge and NanoKit activities. This event is designed to showcase the joy and creative side of learning and building. This joy of learning at the BHS STEM Night event is meant to foster the engineering mindset.
