New feature spotlight: Math Equations in Canvas

Filed in Canvas by on April 12, 2016

Canvas’ math editor is called LaTeX.  You can use LaTeX to input all kinds of mathematical equations and scientific formulas.   The math editor is built into Canvas’ Rich Content Editor (RCE). The RCE is used in tools like Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, and Quizzes.math editor interface

To open the math editor, open a tool that contains a Rich Content Editor (like Pages or Assignments).  Click on the Pi (π) icon to open the Math Editor.

The Math editor window will open in Basic view. Click “Switch View to Advanced” for more options.

Build your equation, then click Insert Equation to add it to the page.  In the RCE, you can add text around your equations if needed.

Click Save to save your changes.

Note: When using the Rich Content Editor in Assignments, Discussions, Pages, and Quizzes, you have the option to Save & Publish. When using the Rich Content Editor in the Syllabus and Discussions pages, the Save button may appear as “Update Syllabus” or “Post Reply”.
