Pro Tip Tuesday – Copy or Share a Module in Canvas

Filed in Canvas by on September 15, 2020

Did you know you can make copies of your Modules in Canvas or share them with other courses or instructors?

Here’s how to duplicate a module within the same course:

Click on Modules (or Pages, Discussions, Assignments)

Click the Options icon for the module you’d like to copy (1)

Click Duplicate (2)

duplicate a module

There are a couple limitations to copying Modules, so if you don’t see the Duplicate button, here is what may be happening:

Duplication Limitations

  • Quizzes—Only New Quizzes quizzes are supported for copying within modules. If a module contains a quiz created by the classic Canvas quiz tool, the option to copy a module does not display in the module menu. Modules can be copied by removing the classic quiz from the module.
  • External Tool (LTI) Assignments—A module cannot be copied if it contains an external tool (LTI) assignment. If a module contains an external tool assignment, the option to copy a module does not display in the module menu. Modules can be copied by removing the external tool assignment from the module.
  • The content in a MasteryPath module can be duplicated, but the duplicate will not retain the MasteryPath.
  • If you have set prerequisites or unlock dates for modules, they are not included as part of the duplicate.

You can also share a Module with another course or another instructor:

Click Modules

Click the Options icon for the module you’d like to copy or send (1)

Click Send To to share with another person OR click Copy To to select another course site. (2)
