OBS is great for any and all screen-recording needs.
Remember who you are…
Your development journey is an important thing, so remember to save it often. If your team has chosen where to keep the blog and decided what tools to use for it, then this training module can be considered complete.
This module goes over a practice that is widely used in all sorts of collaborations. If you’ve ever seen a “Dev Blog” or a “Making-of” video, you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about. Keeping mementos of the development process is important for realizing how far you’ve come once you’ve reached the end. Additionally, showing off your personality is always helpful for gaining fans!
Necessary Tools: Completely up to you, but we do have some recommendations – Zoom for recordable meetings, Craig for easy audio recording in Discord, Blogger or Tumblr for a dev blog, Paint (available on all Windows computers by default) or GIMP for saving screenshots, and OBS for saving videos of the game-making process.
Team Meetings
Meetings make it easier to work together as a team. In all likelihood, you’ll have at least one each week if not more. Recording them is ALWAYS a good idea. The Discord Bot named Craig can record the audio of any Discord meetings you have, but Zoom has a built-in record functionality that saves a video directly to your computer.
Developer’s Blog
At the very least, a dev blog contains weekly entries from different members of the development team. Each post contains that week’s work, the author’s thoughts on the project so far, and any interesting ideas, game bugs, or difficulties that arose. Each team member should be free to add to this blog at any time, so make sure that the blog is accessible. Blogger and Tumblr are good options as long as the login credentials are shared.
Screenshots and Videos
In addition to written posts, the blog should also contain your best screenshots and videos of the game-making process. How do you collect those, though?
The answer is “easily.” As long as your computer has a PrtScn or Print Screen button, you can take a screenshot just by pressing it. Then, you just need to paste it into a photo-editing application like Paint or GIMP in order to be able to save it.
As for videos, we’ve included a tutorial below to get you started with OBS, a free screen capture tool that you could use for all sorts of purposes:
