Intelligent Transportation Systems
The purpose of an Intelligent Transportation System is to explore ideas and identify solutions to managing traffic congestion and to improve traffic flow and tourist crowding problems. The overall goal is to protect and enhance the current and future visitor experience in the park while protecting park resources and values. More specifically, an Intelligent Transportation System would allow the park to reduce traffic and tourist congestion by monitoring, in real time, traffic conditions and parking lot capacity throughout the park. This information would enable park personal and tourists to be better informed of traffic patterns in order to make safer, more coordinated, and ‘smarter’ use of transport networks. Overall, the goal of the ITS is to reduce tourist impacts. The 2017 WPI IT Systems Team will research the feasibility of implementing an IT System in Acadia National Park.
