Trail View Website

The WPI Trail View Hiking Project began in 2012, and intended to bring the 125 miles of hiking trails into the digital age. By taking panoramic images of all the trails, WPI was able to create virtual tours of those trails.  Each year, a new WPI research team took 360-degree photos of different trails of Acadia National Park until the entire trail system was fully documented. The task of collecting all of the images was arduous, and the 2012, 2013, and 2014 teams’ efforts were severely limited due to the time-consuming nature of the technology available at the time.

The 2019, 2020 and 2021 WPI Trail View Hiking Team’s created virtual tours for the trails in the park using the images from previous research teams.  The acadiatrails.wpi.edu website was developed to house the tours, thus making them accessible to the public.
