Congratulations Katherine Gomes on the 2020 Provost’s MQP Award

Filed in PW MQPs by on May 12, 2020

The PW program is pleased to announce that the winner of the Provost’s MQP Award for the most outstanding project in Professional Writing for 2020 is Katherine Gomes for her project entitled Segurança e Pesquisa: A Case Study of Translation & Localization of Standard Operating Procedures in the BIOTAR Laboratory, advised by Professor Boucher and Professor Lewis.

For her MQP, Katherine addressed the problem of a lack of safety documentation in a Brazilian Food Engineering laboratory by conducting in-depth observations to create a customized Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). She then translated and localized the document into Portuguese. To assess the value of human translation, she tested her own translated SOP against a Google-Translated version and obtained feedback from her audience. Her audience found her translation was more accurate and useful in practice.

We would also like to give a special acknowledgement to Sahil Nawab for his second-place project titled Developing Healthcare Metrics for Free Clinics in Worcester (advised by Professor Faber).

Finally, congratulations to all PW seniors for their hard work and success on their MQP projects.
